In and Out of Africa: An Inland Safari and an Island Adventure
with

Kenya, Africa

Imagine 10 glorious days in exotic eastern Africa, beginning with a private plane ride from Nairobi to an exclusive Kenyan wild life preserve where we will observe elephants, giraffes, zebras, rhinoceroses, and countless other animals at sunrise and at sunset, visit local villages and meet local artisans, cook and enjoy the best local cuisine, and explore the countryside by land rover, horseback or camelback (as you choose).

Our delicious Kenyan cuisine includes such specialties as Ugali (Kenyan polenta), chapatti (an Indian crepe), nyama choma (grilled beef, goat, and lamb) and kachumbari (a condiment of shredded onions, peppers and tomatoes in a savory dressing of lemon juice and cilantro).

When our luxurious safari is over, we will board a second private plane and fly to the island paradise of Lamu just off the coast of Kenya in the Indian ocean.

The village of Lamu, the island, and the archipelago, lie 2 degrees south of the equator along Kenya’s coast. The streets of Lamu are narrow, cool, and quiet, and are surrounded by massive stone buildings whose thick coral rag walls give the town its distinct color and texture. In 2001, Lamu became a world heritage site in order to protect the oldest inhabited Swahili settlement south of the Sahara. We will be spending 5 days in Lamu in a beautiful private compound on the beach near Shela village owned by Princess Caroline of Monaco! The white sand beaches run for 12 kilometers along the Indian ocean, flanked by ancient sand dunes.

Because of centuries of Arab invasions as well as Indian influence under British colonial rule, the cuisine here isheavily influenced by Indian and Arabic flavors, and the spices of Zanzibar, including nutmeg, cinnamon, cumin, coriander, and ras el hanout. Seafood is king, especially ‘Lobster Swahili’, which we will enjoy at one of our Swahili dinners under the stars!
